Pregnancy is an exciting journey, but it can also bring unexpected medical expenses. Maternity insurance in Singapore helps provide financial support if certain pregnancy complications, childbirth-related conditions or newborn health issues arise. Depending on the policy, it may also cover hospitalisation, congenital illnesses, psychological consultations and additional protection for your baby after birth.

However, not every maternity insurance plan covers the same conditions, and routine pregnancy check-ups or delivery expenses are not automatically covered. Before buying a policy, ask about its benefits, exclusions, waiting periods, premiums and eligibility requirements.

Think of maternity insurance like an umbrella. You may not need it on a sunny day, but when an unexpected storm arrives, having the right protection can make a difference. The key is choosing an umbrella that covers the situations you are most concerned about.

This guide explains the essential questions to ask when comparing AIA maternity insurance, Great Eastern maternity insurance and Prudential maternity insurance in Singapore.

What Is Maternity Insurance?

Maternity insurance is a type of insurance designed to provide financial protection to an expectant mother and, depending on the plan, her baby. It generally covers specified pregnancy complications and certain medical conditions affecting the newborn, subject to policy terms.

Unlike standard hospitalisation insurance, which focuses on eligible medical treatment and hospital expenses, maternity insurance may provide a lump-sum payout or daily hospital cash benefit when a covered event occurs.

For example, Great Eastern's GREAT Maternity Care 2 schedule includes benefits for specified pregnancy and childbirth complications, maternal hospitalisation, congenital illnesses, juvenile illnesses and certain newborn hospitalisation events. Great Eastern's benefit schedule

1. What Does Maternity Insurance Cover?

This should be your first question because the name of a policy alone does not tell you what protection it offers.

Depending on the insurer and plan, maternity insurance may cover:

  • Pregnancy complications: Selected conditions such as pre-eclampsia, ectopic pregnancy or placental complications.
  • Maternal hospitalisation: Daily cash benefits for specified hospitalisation events.
  • Congenital illnesses: Certain medical conditions diagnosed in a newborn.
  • Newborn hospitalisation: Selected events such as intensive care, incubation or treatment for severe neonatal jaundice.
  • Juvenile illnesses: Certain childhood conditions specified in the policy.
  • Mental wellness support: Eligible psychological consultations or benefits related to postpartum depression.
  • Additional protection: Some plans include benefits related to major organ surgery, early Caesarean delivery or future insurance coverage.

The exact benefits and payout limits vary between plans.

Coverage questionWhat to check
Pregnancy complicationsWhich conditions are specifically covered?
HospitalisationIs there a daily cash benefit, and what is the maximum payout?
Congenital illnessesWhich conditions are included, and how long does coverage last?
Newborn careAre ICU, incubation and severe neonatal jaundice covered?
Mental wellnessAre consultations or postpartum depression benefits included?
Additional benefitsAre early Caesarean delivery or major organ surgery covered?

Important: A policy that covers pregnancy complications does not necessarily pay for every medical expense during pregnancy. Ask whether benefits are paid as a fixed cash amount, reimbursement of eligible expenses, or another form of payout.

2. When Should I Buy Maternity Insurance?

The next question is about timing. Some maternity insurance plans allow applications only within a specified pregnancy window.

For example, Great Eastern's Maternity Protect and Prudential's PRUMum product information describes eligibility beginning as early as week 13 of pregnancy. Great Eastern's GREAT Maternity Care 2 is a separate product, so check its applicable eligibility and policy requirements rather than assuming the same rules apply.

If you are already pregnant, do not assume it is too late to get maternity insurance. Ask the insurer or a qualified financial representative:

  • At which week of pregnancy can I apply?
  • What is the latest eligible week?
  • Does my current pregnancy stage affect coverage?
  • Are medical questions or underwriting required?
  • Will complications identified before the policy starts be excluded?

How to get maternity insurance while pregnant

  1. Compare policies available to expectant mothers in Singapore.
  2. Confirm your eligibility based on your pregnancy week and medical history.
  3. Request the latest benefit schedule, premium quotation and policy wording.
  4. Review exclusions, benefit limits and coverage start dates.
  5. Complete the application and disclose the required medical information honestly.
  6. Confirm when coverage becomes effective before relying on the policy.

Never assume that a condition already diagnosed before coverage begins will be covered.

3. How Much Is Maternity Insurance in Singapore?

The cost depends on the insurer, plan type, coverage amount, mother's age and other eligibility factors. Some maternity plans use a single premium rather than monthly payments.

For example, the published premium schedule for Great Eastern GREAT Maternity Care 2 lists the following single premiums for a pregnancy with one foetus conceived naturally:

Mother's age next birthdayS$5,000 sum assuredS$10,000 sum assured
18–30S$478S$860
31–35S$509S$916
36–39S$582S$1,106
40–45S$670S$1,273

These figures are from the benefit schedule dated 26 August 2025 and should be confirmed with Great Eastern before purchase. The schedule also states that a 50% premium loading applies to twin pregnancies or pregnancies conceived through assisted conception, with a further calculation applying when both conditions are present. When asking how much maternity insurance costs, also ask whether the quoted premium includes all intended benefits, whether add-ons cost extra and whether the policy has any cash value if cancelled early.

4. Does the Policy Cover Both Mother and Baby?

A maternity policy may cover the mother during pregnancy and provide separate benefits for the baby after birth. However, the covered conditions, benefit amounts and duration can differ.

For example, AIA Mum2Baby Choices combines a base plan with a prenatal rider and provides benefits for specified maternal complications and newborn conditions. Prudential's PRUMum includes specified pregnancy complications, congenital illnesses, hospital care and mental wellness benefits. Great Eastern's GREAT Maternity Care 2 has separate benefit schedules for the mother and child.

Before purchasing, ask:

  • Is the baby automatically insured under the policy?
  • Are twins covered separately?
  • What happens if the baby needs intensive care?
  • Does coverage continue after birth, and for how long?
  • Can I purchase additional insurance for my baby without medical underwriting?

This last point matters because some plans offer a guaranteed insurability option, subject to conditions and deadlines. AIA's product information describes a transfer option within 100 days of birth, while Great Eastern's GREAT Maternity Care 2 schedule describes a guaranteed insurability option within 90 days. Always verify the relevant product's current terms.

5. What Is Not Covered by Maternity Insurance?

Exclusions are just as important as benefits. A policy may list many covered conditions but still exclude particular circumstances or impose strict limits.

Ask whether the plan covers or excludes:

  • Routine antenatal check-ups and ultrasound scans.
  • Standard delivery and elective Caesarean delivery costs.
  • Pre-existing medical conditions.
  • Complications diagnosed before the coverage begins.
  • Fertility treatments or assisted pregnancies.
  • Conditions not listed in the policy.
  • Hospitalisation that does not meet the policy's definition of a covered event.

For example, a hospital cash benefit is not necessarily the same as reimbursement of your full hospital bill. If a policy pays a fixed amount per day, you may still need to pay expenses beyond that benefit.

Read the exclusions and definitions carefully. If an insurer or representative says a condition is covered, ask them to point to the relevant section of the policy document.

6. AIA vs Great Eastern vs Prudential: What Should You Compare?

When comparing maternity insurance in Singapore, focus on the benefits that matter to your family instead of choosing based on the insurer's name alone.
