Cord blood is collected in the few minutes after your baby is born and the umbilical cord has been clamped. Your delivery team collects the blood that remains in the cord into a sterile bag. It usually takes only a few minutes.
The collection does not involve your baby. We collect only the blood left in the cord and placenta, which would otherwise be discarded. It works with both vaginal and caesarean births, and it does not change your birth plan.
Because collection can only happen at birth, it helps to have everything in place before your due date.
